What do these famous people all have in common? They have all struggled to cope with Stage Fright.
Stage fright is the most common phobia around the world. It affects the average person as well as famous people. Rich are as equally affected as the poor. Let’s look at some famous people who have experienced stage fright, how it affected them and what they did to cope with it. Studying how the famous overcome their individual phobias will help and encourage us to face and overcome it.

1. Donny Osmond
American singer and renowned TV star of the Donny and Maria show, Donny Osmond, suffers from anxiety. Experiencing a stage fright panic attack during a performance in 1994, Donny started mistakenly believing he would never be able to perform and the panic attacks prevented him from singing. Donny also started believing that people in the shopping center would laugh at him and therefore he became extremely afraid of malls, so he stopped going to shopping malls. However, later Donny underwent cognitive behavioral therapy and conquered his fear after consulting a psychologist.

2. Barbra Streisand
Stage fright can come to a person at any stage of his or her life. Today a person may not be having stage fright, however, due to circumstances, may develop stage fright. An example of such a situation is the famous American Singer/actress/director Barbra Streisand. She developed stage fright at a later part of her professional career, in spite of past successes. Once, after forgetting words in many songs in 1967, during a concert in New York’s Central Park, Streisand couldn’t sing in public for twenty-seven years. She got so self-conscious and lost her self-confidence, fearing she would again be put into an embarrassing situation if she performed in public. However, Streisand fought valiantly with her stage fright and gave a comeback tour. She gradually started performing in smaller live shows and then moved on to perform at the national level.

3. Sir Laurence Olivier
Another example of developing a social phobia at the peak a of career is actor Laurence Olivier, who, just by thinking that he might not be able to recall his lines for a play, lost confidence in himself and the desire to perform. He suffered from his phobia for five long years as he admitted in his autobiography.

4. Susie O'Neill
In the early days, Commonwealth gold medallist Queensland swimmer, Susie O'Neill, feared winning because if she won, it would mean that she would have to stand on the podium and become the center of attention, which she feared the most. To fulfill her potential as an athlete, it became necessary for her to overcome her anxiety. She went to the extreme of praying that she wouldn’t be chosen for a team event as she was afraid of talking to strangers.

5. Kim Basinger
Oscar winning American actor, Kim Basinger's childhood fear, an anxiety disorder that make her unable to read aloud in the classroom, even affected her while she was on stage accepting her Oscar. In spite of considerable practice of her winning speech, she was unable to speak the words. It was only after psychotherapy that she could overcome her anxiety and resolve her problems.
