Have you ever been in the audience of a seminar or even a wedding, where there is a public speaker that just exudes self confidence? Have you ever sat back and thought to yourself that the speaker must be very sure of himself and have quite a bit of self esteem and confidence? How you achieve that level of self confidence? The key to successful public speaking is self confidence. And even if you are thinking right now, that you aren’t entirely self confident, that’s okay. Just like the old saying goes – Fake it before you make it! Even if you don’t feel 100% self confident, fake it. Just pretend that you are an extremely confident person and you will exude the confidence level that you need. There are a few keys to developing self confidence that will make a big difference when it comes to public speaking. When you feel good about yourself, you won’t be as nervous when you walk out on that stage, and your audience will see that. So how do you get to feel good about yourself? What does it take to get there? What does it take to be confident about yourself? The first thing that you need to do before you even get close to stepping foot on stage is to be prepared. When you are well prepared, you will feel much better about what you are getting up there to say. Forget about winging it. Winging it is never a good idea, no matter what anyone says. If you aren’t completely prepared with notes, cue cards, or papers with the points you need to cover clearly spelled out for you, you are setting yourself up for failure. If you are already feeling nervous about being up on stage and then you don’t have notes in front of you, you are absolutely increasing your chances of forgetting what you were going to talk about and making yourself look foolish. And that is just one more thing that you can feel anxious about. Eliminate any chance that you might have to be anxious. If you are prepared, your confidence in your subject matter will show through, making you appear confident even if you aren’t feeling it. Another easy thing that you can do to make yourself appear more confident is to really think about the clothes that you are going to wear. This may seem like a simple and insignificant thing, however it’s really essential. If you are wearing a dress that is a little too small, and you are standing on stage, continually tugging at your outfit, you will not feel very good about yourself, and that will just increase your anxiety as well. Likewise, if you are wearing an outfit that you know you look good in, you look professional, and you are comfortable, you will not need to worry about your appearance at all and you can confidently go up on stage, knowing that you look your best. If you don’t have time to participate in some confidence building exercises before your event, there are still a few things that you can do. Make sure that you make eye contact with someone in the audience, maybe someone that you know. Smile a lot, that will make you appear confident with yourself as well as friendly and approachable. Remember, even if you are not feeling overly confident, you can still fake it, and your audience will never know the difference. Confidence, real or perceived is the key to successful public speaking and to impressing your audience.
