Let’s face it, you’re scared. Public speaking is just not on the top of the list of fun things to do for most people.
In fact, I’m sure you can list a lot of other things that you would much rather be doing. But if you have to do it, you might as well do the best job that you possibly can.
And you can do an excellent job. Just keep these few tips in mind and you’ll be great.
- Relax. I know, it’s easier said than done. But take a deep breath, let it out and just go for it. It really isn’t as bad as you’ve made it out to be in your head.
- Rehearse. I can’t say this enough. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. The more you practice, the more natural it will feel and you will have the confidence that you need to get up on stage and deliver your speech. Practice, and then practice again!
- Visualize. Take some time to close your eyes and visualize yourself up on the strange, going through the speech. Go through the whole thing, from start to finish. Visualize yourself looking at the audience, smiling and getting through your speech flawlessly.
- Set a goal. What do you want to achieve with your speech? Do you just want to get up and say what you need to say, or do you want to get up and entertain? Do you want to do a good job, or is your goal just to get it done? Decide what you want to do and get it done.
- Smile. You will absolutely disarm your audience if you put on a big smile. Give it all you got and keep smiling. After every few sentences, stop and smile to the audience, that will not only keep their attention, but it will relax you as well.
- Don’t read. Take notes on cue cards up to the podium with you so you don’t forget what you will say, but do not print out a fully prepared speech. If you have a printed speech, you will stand and read and that will not only appear unnatural and wooden, but will go fast and will not be professional. Make notes so you don’t forget what you want to say, but do not read off the paper.
