Last February, we published an article about strategies for public speakers. Here are some more strategies to ace that public speaking skills:

1. Prepare your content - Make sure your speech has a beginning, middle, and end.
2. Use notes. If you will be standing at a podium, have your notes already there before the audience arrives.
3. Use humor sparingly. Humor can be a great addition to any speech, but only if done right. Since you will be talking to many people with your speech, keep in mind that you do not know what will or will not offend them.

Why do I have Stage Fright?

Oftentimes we wonder why we experience stage fright. Stage fright doesn’t have just one single cause.

Stage fright is caused by a release of adrenaline into the blood stream. Adrenaline, also known as the “fight or flight” chemical, triggers a physical reaction within the person – including shaky hands, sweating, and increased heart rate. Many of the side effects of stage fright are associated with this chemical being released.

Ultimately, you are the biggest contributor to your stage fright. Although this might sound depressing, it is really a very powerful statement. Since you are the biggest contributor, you can also have the biggest impact and are in direct control of how well you overcome your stage fright. Stage fright often occurs in individuals who are worried about what the audience will think about them, are trying too hard to be perfect, and who are not comfortable and confident with themselves and their abilities.

How To Be An Extrovert?

A good way to teach yourself the self-confidence that is necessary to effectively deal with stage fright is to take on a few of these day-to-day tasks that make you uncomfortable.

This is a type of Behavior Therapy called exposure. You’ll gradually expose yourself to situations and conditions that make yourself uncomfortable. This gives you a chance to get used to those sensations of anxiety and stage fright and learn how to manage them. Plus you’ll be able to institute a few relaxation techniques that I’ll describe to help quell those feelings so you can be an extrovert on your own terms.

Start by identifying one social situation that makes you nervous such as speaking up in a group or a class. Then assign yourself some homework based on this problem. The homework should be as specific as possible, so there is no question that you are making progress.

How Many People Are Going To Be There? One Story on Overcoming Stage Fright

How Many People Are Going To Be There?

Stage

When I entered college I entered a program that required the dreaded thesis reading in front of a large group of peers and faculty members. Many college degree programs have a thesis reading or a series of regular speeches that are required for graduation. These readings may or may not be graded, but unfortunately for us shy guys they are always required.

The thought of having to give a real live reading of work to peers and co-workers can be extremely traumatic for those with stage fright. It seems like a cute problem that kids get stuck with, but kids do grow up into adults with anxiety and stage fright and I am one of them. I say ‘am’ in the present tense because I still deal with stage fright and anxiety, but it is possible to get it under control enough to succeed in any public speaking endeavor.
